MEWP Hire (3a/3b) in Cardiff, Swansea & South Wales

Mobile Elevated Work Platforms (MEWPs) are powered lifts that safely raise people and equipment to working heights. These stable platforms — with guardrails and controls — make working at height safer and more efficient than ladders alone. Trust Scaffolding provides MEWP hire across South Wales with IPAF-certified operators, fully compliant with the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER), PUWER, and Work at Height Regulations 2005.

Why Choose a MEWP Over Scaffolding?

Scaffolding is the right tool for long-term, large-area access. But when the job is one day, one elevation, or one awkward spot — a MEWP wins every time. Here's why site managers call us for a MEWP first.

Up in Minutes

A MEWP is driven into position, outriggers down, platform raised — operational in under 30 minutes. No scaffold erection crew, no tube-by-tube build, no overnight stand. Your tradesperson can start work the same morning.

Zero Scaffold Lead Time

Standard scaffolding can take a day or more to design, deliver, and erect. MEWPs are available same-day or next-morning. For emergency high-level access — storm damage, failed cladding, burst guttering — this speed difference is critical.

Minimal Site Footprint

Spider lifts pass through a standard doorway. Narrow scissor lifts work in aisles. Trailer booms park on the road while the boom reaches over the fence. No pavement licence, no road closure, no scaffold around your entire building for a two-hour repair.

Operated or Self-Drive Hire

We offer both. Operated hire: our IPAF-qualified operator drives and positions the platform — your team just does the work at height. Self-drive hire: suitable for IPAF PAL-card holders on your team. Not sure which? We'll advise.

Operators can drive a MEWP into position and extend or retract the basket as needed, covering tasks such as electrical work, glazing, painting, signage and high-level cleaning. By providing an elevated platform that moves into place, MEWPs eliminate much of the setup time required for scaffolding. Roof repairs, gutter work or facade painting can be done faster — often without the labour and disruption of a full scaffold.

Types of MEWPs Available

Our fleet covers all common powered lifts to suit different access needs:

  • Cherry Pickers (Boom Lifts): Truck or van-mounted booms with an enclosed basket. These may be articulating (jointed) or telescopic (straight), offering 7–58 m working height with extended outreach over obstacles. Ideal for exterior building work, signage, tree surgery and telecoms.
  • Scissor Lifts: Platforms that raise straight up on cross-braced supports. Wide decks (~1–2 m) carry multiple people or tools, with heights from about 5 m to 33 m. Electric models work quietly indoors; rugged rough-terrain versions with outriggers handle outdoor sites.
  • Spider (Atrium) Lifts: Compact tracked lifts with collapsible outriggers that pass through tight openings before extending to 10–25 m. Adjustable legs stabilise on uneven or sloping ground — ideal for churches, atriums and restricted-access sites.
  • Trailer-Mounted (Towable) Booms: Boom lifts on road trailers, hitched to a van or truck. Once unhitched, outriggers lift the chassis and the boom operates like a standard lift. Heights of 10–20 m make these portable and cost-effective for painters, decorators and homeowners.
  • Vertical Mast Lifts: Single telescoping mast with a small platform for 1–2 people. Very narrow footprint, fitting through standard doorways and lifts. Typically 6–8 m reach for tight indoor spaces, office fitouts, and warehouse access.

Find Your Lift: Scissor Lifts vs Cherry Pickers Explained

Most customers know what they need to do — reach a warehouse ceiling, clear a conservatory gutter, repaint a high parapet. They don't need to know the difference between a Category 3a and 3b before they call us. Here's the plain-language guide.

Scissor Lifts (Category 3a) — Vertical Reach on Flat Ground

Scissor lifts raise straight up. They give you a large, stable work deck ideal for multiple operatives or bulky materials. Best for: warehouse maintenance, internal fit-outs, ceiling services, shop refits, flat-roof access, car-park lighting. Electric models leave no marks on polished floors. Outdoor rough-terrain versions handle yards and service areas. Heights from 5 m to 15 m+.

Boom Lifts / Cherry Pickers (Category 3b) — Reach Over Obstacles

Articulating and telescopic booms bend or extend to reach around or over obstacles. A cherry picker can sit on the driveway and extend its arm over a conservatory, parked car, or garden fence to reach the fascia or guttering behind. Best for: gutter clearance, exterior painting, fascia repair, signage, tree surgery, telecoms, roofline work on detached or semi-detached properties. Heights from 12 m to 58 m.

When to Choose a MEWP Instead of Scaffolding

  • Speed & Efficiency: A MEWP can be delivered and set up in hours, whereas scaffolding often takes days to erect. MEWPs can be driven into place, raised immediately, and repositioned on the fly without dismantling.
  • Limited Space: Compact MEWPs — mast lifts, small scissor lifts or tracked spiders — have narrow bases and tight turning radii. They can be brought through gates, doors or driveways, eliminating the large footprint of scaffold.
  • Access Flexibility: Articulating booms bend over eaves or around obstacles; telescopic booms extend straight out for distant reaches. Scissor lifts give a large, level work deck for multi-person jobs. Outriggers or tracks handle uneven ground where scaffold stability would be compromised.
  • Short-Term Projects: For brief jobs — replacing guttering, changing lights, cleaning windows or installing signs — hiring a MEWP is often more cost-effective than scaffolding. You avoid the labour and time needed to build towers for a short task.

Safety Standards & Compliance

IPAF-Certified Operators: More Than a Hire Yard

A MEWP is heavy machinery. The biggest risk on any site is an unqualified or unfamiliar operator at the controls. We don't just hire the machines — we provide fully IPAF PAL-card-qualified operators who ensure every lift is executed with precision and full adherence to Category 1a, 3a, and 3b safety standards. Every operated hire includes: pre-lift site risk assessment; ground condition and overhead hazard check; LOLER-compliant pre-use inspection; harness briefing; and a dedicated operator who stays with the machine for the duration of the lift.

This transforms your MEWP hire from a rental transaction into a Professional Operated Access Service — the same accountability you'd expect from a principal contractor. Request an operated MEWP hire quote today.

  • IPAF Certification: UK regulations require all MEWP operators to be trained and competent. The standard qualification is an IPAF course covering both boom (Category 3A/3B) and scissor lifts, resulting in a Powered Access Licence (PAL) card valid for five years. We ensure every operator is IPAF-certified.
  • Regulatory Compliance: MEWP use in the UK is governed by Work at Height Regulations, PUWER and LOLER. Hired platforms must be suitable, well-maintained and inspected. Each unit is thoroughly checked before hire to ensure it is fit for purpose and safe to use.
  • Inspections & Logbooks: Every MEWP undergoes a thorough LOLER inspection at least every six months, plus daily pre-use checks by the operator. We keep detailed maintenance logs and examination records. Before delivery, our team confirms each platform's certificates are current.
  • Safety Features & PPE: All our MEWPs include guardrails, emergency stop switches and outriggers or stabilisers. For boom lifts, operators wear a safety harness attached to the designated anchor point. We brief users on fall protection, spotters and ground-level traffic barriers.
  • Ground & Weather Conditions: We follow HSE guidance on MEWP siting — equipment must be on firm, level ground. Tracked or spider lifts help on slight inclines, but we always assess for hazards (trenches, soft soil, overhead cables). MEWPs must not be used in high winds or stormy conditions; each machine has a specified wind limit.

Our MEWP Hire Service

Trust Scaffolding brings 15+ years of height-access experience in Cardiff, Swansea, Neath and throughout South Wales to our MEWP hire. We deliver and set up the chosen platform at your site so it is ready for immediate use. Our team ensures each machine is properly positioned and stabilised, and we provide full instructions or an operator as required. We can arrange IPAF courses or on-site familiarisation for your staff.

Project-Specific Benefits

  • Domestic Projects: Perfect for roof repairs, gutter cleaning, painting, tree work or solar panel installation. A MEWP avoids occupying your entire yard or driveway with scaffolding, with faster completion and minimal disruption to neighbours.
  • Commercial Projects: Ideal for shops, offices, schools and public buildings. Our platforms allow maintenance teams to change high windows, repair facades, install signage or service lighting without blocking entryways. We schedule off-peak or evening hires to avoid business downtime.
  • Industrial Projects: Large boom lifts handle heavy tools or materials at height, while all-terrain scissors and spider lifts tackle uneven floors or outdoor yards. Rugged enough for servicing high machinery, silos or warehouse racking where fixed scaffolding would be impractical.

Equipment Specifications

  • Working Height: Small mast lifts reach ~5–8 m indoors, standard scissor lifts go up to 10–15 m, and heavy-duty booms extend 20–58 m or higher. We recommend the right height for your task.
  • Platform Size & Capacity: Scissor lift decks are typically ~1–2 m wide for crews or bulky cargo. Boom lift baskets for 1–2 persons plus gear. Load capacities range from roughly 230 kg up to 680 kg.
  • Indoor vs Outdoor Models: Electric MEWPs run quietly with non-marking tyres for indoor use. Diesel and hybrid models power larger booms and rugged scissors for outdoor sites.
  • Mobility: Choose self-propelled units, trailer-mounted booms (towed behind a van), or tracked platforms (spider lifts) for access where wheels struggle.

MEWP Hire FAQs

Do I need a licence or qualification to operate a MEWP?

Yes. In the UK, any MEWP operator must hold a valid IPAF PAL card for the machine category. This one-day course covers practical training and a theory test for boom and scissor lifts. On passing, you receive a photo PAL Card listing the categories covered, valid for five years. Trust Scaffolding can supply a trained operator or advise you on local IPAF courses.

What about insurance for MEWP hire?

Employers and hirers are responsible for adequate insurance. Typically you need Hired-In Plant Insurance to cover damage or loss while the MEWP is in your care, plus Public Liability Insurance for third-party injury or damage. If the lift is mounted on a vehicle and used on public roads, it must have valid Road Traffic Act insurance.

On what surfaces can I use a MEWP?

MEWPs must be on firm, level ground. Lightweight indoor models need flat concrete floors. Outdoor machines usually require compacted ground or paved areas. We can deploy outriggers or use a tracked spider lift on mildly uneven ground, but deep holes, trenches or very soft soil must be avoided. Our crew will assess your site before delivery.

Can I use a MEWP in bad weather?

No. Platforms must not be operated in high winds or stormy weather. Each MEWP has a maximum wind-speed rating (often around 28 mph / 12 m/s). If gusts approach that limit, the platform will not be raised. We also avoid work in heavy rain, lightning or snow — always following HSE guidelines on weather conditions.

How long can I hire a MEWP for?

You can hire by the hour, day or week depending on your project. Short-term hire (a few hours) is available for small jobs, while long-term projects can arrange ongoing weekly rates. All hires include delivery, pick-up and a site briefing. Contact us with your schedule for a competitive quote.

Do I need to keep maintenance records?

All maintenance and inspection records are handled by us. Every MEWP hire comes with a current logbook that must stay with the machine. You are required to record daily pre-use checks. Trust Scaffolding ensures all equipment has passed its bi-annual LOLER statutory examination before handover.

Can a MEWP replace scaffolding for any job?

For many tasks, yes — but not all. MEWPs excel at short-duration or mobile-access jobs. Scaffolding may still be preferable for very long-term work (weeks of continuous access) over a large area, or tasks requiring decking around an entire façade. We can advise: if a MEWP can safely reach and accommodate your needs, it will often save time and cost over erecting full scaffolding.
